At Woodlea Primary School, we are committed to providing a rich and inclusive personal development programme that supports every child to flourish both in school and beyond. Our approach enables children to develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and characteristics they need to succeed academically, socially and emotional as a child and in later life. Our school values of kindness, teamwork, courage, curiosity, resilience and determination underpin all aspects of personal development. These values are explicitly taught, modelled by staff and embedded throughout the curriculum and wider school life, ensuring children understand how to apply them in meaningful and lasting ways.

A Curriculum That Supports the Whole Child

Personal development is carefully planned and delivered through our PSHE curriculum (My Happy Mind), Relationships and Sex Education and our mental health and wellbeing programme (My Happy Mind). Through these, children learn about:

Healthy relationships and respect for others
Online safety and how to manage risks
Physical and mental wellbeing
Understanding emotions and building resilience

Children feel confident discussing these important topics. They are equipped to make safe and informed choices and understand how to look after both their own wellbeing and that of others.

A Culture of Belonging and Respect
At Woodlea, every child is known, valued and respected. We actively promote an inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated, and children develop a clear understanding of fairness, equality and respect for protected characteristics. Our children consistently demonstrate kindness and teamwork, supporting one another and contributing positively to the school community. Behaviour incidents related to discrimination are rare, and children report that they feel safe, supported and proud to be part of our school.

Pupil Voice and Leadership

We believe it is essential that children feel heard and involved in shaping their school experience. Through our democratically elected School Council, children from every class contribute to decision-making and develop a strong understanding of democracy. Opportunities for leadership are further enhanced in Key Stage 2, where children take on roles such as:

House Captains
Junior Road Safety Officers
Librarians
Play Leaders

These roles encourage kindness, teamwork, courage and determination, helping children to develop confidence, responsibility and leadership skills.

Enrichment and Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
We provide a wide range of enrichment opportunities designed to broaden children’s experiences and nurture their talents and interests. These include:

A carefully planned programme of educational visits and trips, which enhance learning and provide real-life experiences.
Regular visitors to the school, including experts, performers and community members, who bring learning to life and broaden children’s understanding of the world.
Arts, music and performance opportunities, including Young Voices at the O2 Arena and taking part in performances at Oakmoor Secondary.
A wide range of sporting events and extracurricular clubs.
Instrumental tuition, including fully funded lessons in Year 4 through Hampshire Music Service.

Leaders have mapped these enrichment experiences so that all children build a rich set of cultural and social experiences during their time at Woodlea. These opportunities develop children’s curiosity, courage and resilience, helping them to try new activities and broaden their horizons.

Physical and Mental Wellbeing
Promoting wellbeing is a key priority at Woodlea. We recognise the importance of physical activity, outdoor learning and time in nature in supporting positive mental health. All classes make regular use of our extensive outdoor spaces, encouraging curiosity and resilience through exploration and learning beyond the classroom. Our strong sports provision further supports children in developing teamwork, perseverance and a healthy lifestyle.

Pastoral Care and Support
Our pastoral support is highly effective, responsive and tailored to children’s individual needs. Staff know children well and quickly identify when additional support may be required. We work closely with families, our ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) and external agencies to ensure that children receive the right support at the right time. Children understand how to access help and feel confident in doing so. Our universal provision includes a well-equipped sensory room, providing a calm and supportive environment that benefits all children.
