Forest School and Outdoor Learning

At Woodlea Primary School, outdoor learning is at the heart of our curriculum. Nestled within a beautiful woodland setting inside a protected nature reserve, our children benefit from unparalleled access to the natural world every day. With extensive grounds, a pond, rich wildlife habitats and mature woodland, our environment provides a unique and inspiring backdrop for learning beyond the classroom.

Learning in Nature
Our Forest School provision enables children to explore, discover and learn in a hands-on, meaningful way. Regular sessions take place in our woodland areas, where children develop confidence, curiosity and independence while working collaboratively with others.  Our EYFS children have access to their own large section of woodland daily.  Through carefully planned activities, children gain a deep understanding of:

  • British trees and plant life, learning to identify species and understand seasonal change

  • Woodland animal habitats, exploring how different animals live, adapt and thrive

  • British birds, observing behaviours, recognising calls, and developing respect for wildlife

This knowledge not only supports the science curriculum but helps children build a lifelong appreciation for the natural environment.

Bushcraft and Practical Skills
A key element of our outdoor learning is the development of practical bushcraft skills. Children are taught to:

  • Use tools safely and responsibly

  • Build shelters and understand natural materials

  • Learn basic fire safety and cooking skills

  • Develop problem-solving, resilience and teamwork

Our purpose-built wooden outdoor classroom, complete with a fire pit area, provides a safe and structured space where these skills can be explored and developed under close supervision.

Supporting Wellbeing and Mental Health
Outdoor learning plays a vital role in supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing. Time spent in nature is proven to:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Improve focus, concentration and behaviour

  • Build confidence and self-esteem

  • Support emotional regulation and resilience

At Woodlea, we recognise the importance of providing children with opportunities to slow down, connect with nature, and experience a sense of calm and belonging. Whether it is pond dipping, quiet observation of wildlife, or working around the fire pit, these experiences contribute significantly to children’s overall wellbeing.

A Unique Learning Environment
Our woodland setting allows us to provide rich, memorable experiences that simply cannot be replicated indoors. From exploring woodland trails to observing seasonal changes across our grounds, every child has the opportunity to engage with the natural world in a meaningful and sustained way.  We are proud that our Forest School and Outdoor Learning provision not only enhances academic learning, but also develops confident, resilient and environmentally responsible young people.
